Micro Acupuncture

What is Micro Acupuncture?

Micro Acupuncture is a new acupuncture procedure involving 48 newly discovered acupuncture points located only in the hands and feet and not associated with any other acupuncture system. These points were discovered by Dr. Freddy Dahlgren, D.Ss., D.Ac. M.Ac.F., M.D., in Denmark in 1984 and researched by Dr. Dahlgren and Dr. Per G. Otte, D.Sc., D.Ac., M.Ac.F. More than 5,000 people have been treated with this procedure throughout Europe and over 10,000 people have benefited from Micro Acupuncture treatment in the U.S. Over 80% of the patients treated have had a marked improvement in their vision and a slowing/stopping of the progression of degeneration.

Micro Acupuncture is used for a variety of medically diagnosed eye conditions. The most commonly treated conditions include:

  • Macular Degeneration (wet & dry)
  • Diabetic Retinopathy
  • Glaucoma
  • Retinitis Pigmentosa
  • Cataracts
  • Stargardt's Syndrome
  • Optic Neuritis
  • Retinal Detachments

Gail Brent is one of five acupuncturists in the U.S. who are now using Micro Acupuncture to treat degenerative eye diseases.

What is the Treatment Process?

On the first visit, a visual field scan is performed and a visual acuity test is taken along with a health history followed by a report of findings. These tests determine the patient's current vision. The patient will then receive six treatments. In addition to acupuncture, nutritional supplements, dietary recommedations, and eye exercies will be recommended.

After six treatments, a second visual fields scan and visual acuity test are conducted and compared to the first tests. We are then able to determine how the patient is responding to the treatments. Once positive change is noted, treatment will continue until the patient is satisfied or until there is no further improvement in the vision tests.

The visual fields scan is conducted by looking into a computerized machine and clicking a hand-held button whenever a flashing light appears on the screen. This machine maps out the patient’s field of vision. The test does not require dilating the eyes. The examples of visual fields scans show improvement by showing the changes. The lighter the color (yellow and green) indicates the clearer vision. The darker the color (red, brown, purple, and black), indicates less vision in that area of the visual field.

The average number of visits varies and is based on the severity of the disease, the length of time it has existed, and the overall health of the patient. Most patients begin with a series of 15 - 30 treatments. It is expected that the patient will need to return one or two times a year to maintain the correction.

Under the best conditions, a new patient is able to get the first test in the morning of day one and three treatments with 3-hour intervals. They receive three treatments the second day. On the third morning, the second visual fields scan and visual acuity test are given.

Note: Patients coming from out of town usually stay for a 1 - 2 week period. They are given 2 -3 treatments a day, Monday through Friday.

New patients must understand that this is not a "miracle cure." Micro Acupuncture can help slow the aging process and its effects on vision but it requires continual updating to maintain the improvement. Stress, other health issues, nutrition, medications and lifestyle all affect the aging process and the effectiveness of the treatments. It takes time for some patients, while others are able to see improvement from treatment to treatment. Approximately 80% attain their expectations of improvement. Only 2% of all patients treated showed no improvement.
